Pinewood Derby

Here are a few photos from the recent Pinewood Derby.

Daniel's car. It's kind of a cross between a shark and a jet fighter. And a car (of course...).

And here are Daniel's cars from his three years in Cub Scouts. Every year his design ideas get just a bit wilder...

He's always disappointed that it doesn't do better in the racing, but we always spend most of the time on the design, and then slap the wheels on at the last moment, so it's not surprising that his cars usually aren't all that fast. This year he was probably in the top third or so -- he didn't make it into the finals, but won most of the heats he was in, so he was pretty happy about it overall.

And finally, here he is with his ribbon for "most original design."

Sakura

桜 桜
弥生の空は...

Here are a few photos of our sakura (Japanese blossoming cherry) trees this spring. It's going to be really cool when these babies are 30' tall...

This has nothing to do with sakura, but here is a raccoon that was wandering around our deck a few weeks ago.

Lisa's Latest

Lisa has had a busy couple of weeks.

A few weeks ago in her "life skills" class they were talking about goals. She set a goal to score a point in a soccer game, and sure enough, two weeks ago she scored the game-winning goal. No photo, because I wasn't at the game... but it was still pretty cool.

Besides that, she played a violin solo for Young Women's, had an orchestra concert, played a solo (with piano accompaniment) in a recital, and was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Here she is with her certificate.

And this just for a bit of self-indulgent fun... the NJHS chapter keeps a book of members, and as part of their induction ceremony each of the kids signs the book. Afterward I went up and flipped back a few years to the following page.

Looks like I missed the actual induction and had to sign later... there were other people waiting to look at it, so I didn't flip through and find everybody else, but Lisa is the 9th Luke in that book. :)

Prom Season

Wow, so much has been going on lately that I have a ton of things to blog about and no time to do it...

Well, Prom is coming up, so we're moving into that exciting phase of shopping for shoes, altering dresses, etc. Okay, by "we" I mean I'm a distant observer. And I suspect I end up paying for most of it, one way or another...

Rachel got asked by a guy whose parents it turns out I know. His dad played the organ for the Saturday afternoon session of stake conference the week before last, and I led the music. I wish I knew then his son was going to ask Rachel out, I would have talked to him more. And his mom is a girl from Rexburg that was at a month-long program at ISU that I attended in the summer before our senior year of high school. It's a small world...

And today we learned that Rachel is one of the five candidates for "Prom Princess". I guess they do Prince and Princess (juniors) in addition to King/Queen (seniors). How cool is that? I had a hard time just finding dates to dances, and now she's royalty. What a difference a generation makes...

Easter Eggs Etc.

Some recent photos, just for fun...
