At Christmas
I didn't get many good photos from Christmas, but here are a few.
One of the things we like to do is have a "shepherd's dinner" on Christmas Eve. We've got some wooden dishes that we use, and we try to eat things that are at least semi-plausible as what shepherds in Palestine might have eaten 2000 years ago.
As we were getting ready, the kids were having fun with the wooden dishes and constructed their own manger scene.
And who is it in the manger?
Carving the roast beast. (Which was really, really good!)
Ready to begin eating.
Later that night, after Santa's visit.
Christmas Day, the aftermath.
I didn't get many photos of the gifts, because I was mostly shooting video. But these are fun -- here's what Daniel found for Rachel.
Anyway, we enjoyed a great Christmas, and hope you all did too!

Gift
For Christmas Jim and Beth gave us a cool waffle cone maker. I had no idea such things even existed. We made a batch and had ice cream cones for home evening. They turned out pretty well for a first attempt.

Total Eclipse of the Heart
The evening of the winter solstice there was a total eclipse of the moon. Most of us stayed up and watched at least part of it.
It was cloudy all day long, but cleared up nicely just before the eclipse began.
It was weird watching the moon slowly dim and vanish.
Going, going...
Something you can't ordinarily see (or photograph): the moon with stars.
Orion and the full moon.
And then, as quietly as it vanished, the moon slowly came back.

Ring of Fire
A few photos from Daniel's birthday last month...
Blowing out twelve (12!!!! Yikes!!!) candles.
Daniel doesn't like cake (or cookies, or ice cream, or most kinds of candy, or...), but he does like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, so that's what he got.
For gifts he got a book...
...and a cool World War II role playing game.
Excited to be 12!

Castle Walls
Last week we made the traditional gingerbread (okay, graham cracker) houses. Even Sunny wanted to be part of the action.
Here's how they turned out:
Lisa was the most traditional, with a quaint house and snowy outdoor scene.
Apparently there are kids who like making snow angels living in her house. :)
Yumiko went with a completely different idea.
Andrew started doing something pretty ambitious, but it fell apart on him, so he scaled back to a humble little dwelling with a big wood pile in back.
I went with a castle theme.
Daniel also went the castle route, but as usual his is the biggest, most grandiose design.
He had a lot of fun crafting and hanging the bells in the tower.

A Little Christmas Music
'Tis the season... for music recitals!
We started out the month with Lisa's violin recital. She did two numbers, one solo and one duet.
Looking relaxed after it's over!
Lisa also played in two orchestras in the big CHS band/choir/orchestra Christmas concert.
They also did a big combined number with everyone on the stage at the same time, but there were so many kids that we couldn't even see her in that one.
Then Yumiko and the kids played in a piano recital.
And we had our ward Christmas party. While people were eating, Yumiko and Lisa played some Christmas songs...
...and Andrew and Lisa played Pachelbel's Canon in D.
Lisa played in the "ward orchestra"...
...and as he is wont to do about once per decade, Yours Truly even got into the act.
Yes, they were pretty desperate for entertainment...
No photos, but Lisa also played for YW in Excellence, in church last Sunday, and she'll be playing with the ward choir for the Christmas program tomorrow. Whew!
