Summer and Lightning

Last night we had an amazing lightning storm. It started out as a beautiful evening with some gorgeous clouds...

...and then this stuff started happening.

The storm went on for two to three hours. During the heaviest part of the storm, for about an hour, there was probably an average of one flash every second. It was amazing.

Dave, these are amazing shots! It was cool even from a distance in Middleton. Had to have been pretty amazing actually being in the storm!

Actually closer to 900.

The problem with lightning, of course, is that by the time you see the light it's over, so it's too late to trip the shutter, so you have to shoot first and hope a flash happens while the shutter is open. And then (particularly when you're in the middle of the storm) the flash could be either too dim or way too bright to show up well. I caught some really amazing streaks of lightning that in the photos just showed up as a pure white frame because they were too bright.

So yeah, you have to take a lot and delete most of them.
